Communication Sciences and Disorders
Department Overview
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) offers a master's degree in speech-language pathology. The graduate program prepares students to provide preventative, diagnostic and rehabilitative services to persons exhibiting speech, language and swallowing disorders. It is a full-time, on-campus graduate program that emphasizes research, evidence-based experiences, and comprehensive clinical training.
Students benefit from faculty who are teaching courses and supervising in their primary areas of research and clinical interests.
The NCCU Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic provides speech and language evaluations, treatment services, and hearing screenings for monolingual and bilingual clients from birth through adulthood.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) offers a Master of Science (M.S.) program in speech-language pathology through two distinct tracks:
- Traditional Track: For students who have completed a bachelor's degree in CSD or have already fulfilled all required undergraduate prerequisite courses.
- Leveling Track: For students who have a bachelor's degree in another field. These students complete all required prerequisite courses at the graduate level before continuing with the two-year master's curriculum.
Both tracks are designed to prepare students for American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification, state licensure, and careers as speech-language pathologists.
Graduates are eligible to apply for certification by ASHA, for licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NCBOESLPA) and for the specialist license issued by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
