Communication Sciences and Disorders

Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Communication Science and Disorders Department, where we invite you to embark on a transformative educational path with us at North Carolina Central University.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) offers a master's degree in speech-language pathology. The graduate program prepares students to provide preventative, diagnostic and rehabilitative services to persons exhibiting speech, language and swallowing disorders. It is a full-time, on-campus graduate program and features a curriculum that integrates research, evidence-based clinical experiences and a focus on serving diverse populations.

Students benefit from faculty who are teaching courses and supervising in their primary areas of research and clinical interests. The NCCU Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic provides speech, language and hearing evaluations and treatment services for monolingual and bilingual clients from birth through adult age. Additionally, the Department of CSD offers online prerequisite courses needed to apply for admission to most graduate programs in speech-language pathology.

Graduates are eligible to apply for certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), for licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NCBOESLPA) and for the specialist license issued by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
