Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D., was appointed the 12th chancellor of North Carolina Central University on June 26, 2017. 

Under Dr. Akinleye’s leadership, NCCU has expanded significantly. Among his accomplishments, the university has increased its enrollment to over 8,200 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs (both on campus and online) and recorded the largest number of graduates for a fall commencement exercise. ​​​​​

NCCU's 20192024 Strategic Plan, “Charting a New Landscape for Student-Centered Success,” was approved by the NCCU Board of Trustees in February 2019. This innovative and transformational plan includes four central goals: student access and success; innovation, research, and entrepreneurship; collaboration and partnerships; and institutional sustainability.
