Welcome to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at North Carolina Central University.
Established in 1976, our department is housed in the College of Health and Sciences and offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Speech-Language Pathology. We are proud to be an accredited program, preparing future speech-language pathologists who are both clinically competent and committed to promoting communication access for all. Our work is rooted in the university’s motto of “Truth and Service”, and we are guided by a shared commitment to empowering voices and serving communities.
Our department offers opportunities for students to thrive academically, professionally, and personally. Students begin their clinical training in our on-campus Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic, which provides free diagnostic and therapeutic services to children and adults. From there, they continue in community practicum placements, including public schools, private practices, hospitals, and healthcare facilities, gaining the skills to serve across settings and populations.
Students are guided by expert faculty who are engaged in innovative research and dedicated to student success. Our faculty includes two Fellows of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as accomplished scholars and grant recipients conducting research in areas such as autism, child language, multilingualism, interprofessional education, neurogenic communication disorders, and the use of artificial intelligence in speech-language pathology. Faculty are also committed mentors, supporting students both academically and professionally.
We also offer a concentration in bilingualism, preparing students to provide effective, people-centered care in a variety of service contexts.
Whether you are a prospective student, a community partner, or a current member of our academic community, I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about our program, clinical services, and faculty. We welcome your interest and look forward to connecting with you.
Sincerely,
Yolanda D. Keller-Bell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
