The Department of Social Work prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to understand and respond to the needs of individuals, families, communities, and society. Our programs provide students with opportunities to examine human behavior, social systems, and the complex issues that shape the world around us while preparing them to promote positive change in their professions and communities.
Program Overview
The Department of Social Work prepares students for careers in social work, behavioral health, healthcare, child and family services, community and nonprofit organizations, government, advocacy, and other human service settings. Graduates are also prepared to pursue advanced and professional degrees in social work and related behavioral and social science fields.
The department offers Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.), Master of Social Work (M.S.W.), and Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) degree programs and provides Sociology courses that support the University’s General Education Curriculum and other academic disciplines. Through classroom instruction, field education, research, and experiential learning, students develop the professional knowledge and skills needed to serve various populations, strengthen communities, and contribute to an evolving workforce.

The Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) program prepares students for entry-level generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Through coursework and field education, students develop the knowledge, values, skills, and competencies needed for professional social work practice and graduate education.
The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program prepares students for advanced generalist practice and leadership across micro, mezzo, and macro levels. The program offers a two-year traditional option and a one-year advanced standing option for eligible students who have earned a B.S.W. from an accredited social work program.
The Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) B.S. program provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation for understanding human behavior, social systems, and communities. Students are able to apply eligible coursework from NCCU and other accredited institutions, as well as military credit, toward degree completion.

The M.S.W. Graduate Student Association acts as a liaison between students and faculty to ensure the satisfaction and scholarship of graduate students. This student-led organization also develops internal programs and offers networking and professional development opportunities.
The Phi Alpha Honor Society provides a closer bond among social work students and promotes humanitarian goals and ideas. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.
The Eagle Advocate is published every Fall and Spring semester, highlighting students, faculty, alumni and special events.

The Writing Studio offers in-person, online, daytime, evening and weekend services to support the NCCU community in the craft and process of writing when it fits your schedule best.
