The School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) supports its graduate students through a range of funding opportunities for new and continuing students.
SLIS Financial Support
Graduate Assistantships
As a graduate assistant (GA) in SLIS, you will have the opportunity to support research, teaching, and administrative projects while working alongside SLIS faculty, in the Dean’s Office, or with campus partners such as the Shepard Library, Information Technology Services (ITS), and the Office of Engagement.
Awards are competitive and based on academic merit and program needs. GAs will receive full tuition coverage and a monthly stipend.
Eligibility Requirements
- New admits must have unconditional admission.
- Continuing students must be in good academic standing: maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA; not be on probation; and be making clear progress toward their degree.
- Must be enrolled full-time (at least 9 credit hours) in a graduate degree program in SLIS
- Does not hold a full-time job
- Positions are open to in-state and out-of-state, including international, residents.
- Eligibility is limited to two academic years (a maximum of four semesters).

Ella Fitzgerald Scholarship
The Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Ella Fitzgerald, provides one scholarship award per academic year of up to $12,500 to a student enrolled at SLIS with demonstrated financial need. The recipient, known as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar, may use the award to cover tuition, fees, and related expenses such as books, parking, and software. The scholarship is renewable for a second year, provided the Ella Fitzgerald Scholar maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be eligible for in-state tuition
- Must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 9 credit hours) in the Master of Library Science Program
- Must be in, and remain in, good academic standing and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA to apply for and renew the scholarship award
