As part of its mission, the NCCU School of Graduate Studies provides professional development programs to help graduate students "Take the Lead" on their career path. These programs offer graduate students support for career development, personal development, leadership development, and academic enrichment.
The Graduate and Undergraduate Research Symposium is an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to showcase their research. Students present their research to an audience during an oral presentation or a poster display. Each presentation is judged by faculty members who are experts in their field. Prizes are given to the first-, second-, and third-place winners in the following categories: Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and the Humanities. In addition, the winners are recognized at the Annual Honors Convocation and have a chance to present their research to another audience at the Honors Convocation Reception. Can you explain your research in three minutes in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience? If your answer is yes, this competition is for you.
The first 3MT competition was held at Queensland University in 2008. The competition became a phenomenon and spread across the globe like wildfire. Many universities worldwide adopted the competition. Graduate and Ph.D. candidates who are working on a thesis or a dissertation are eligible to compete.
Each competition begins with preliminary rounds. Once the preliminary rounds are complete, the final completion takes place with the top ten contenders. There are three winners in the final competition: first place, runner up, and people’s choice. Each winner is awarded a monetary prize. The first-place winner will also receive a travel award to represent NCCU at the regional finals.

The Accelerate to Industry program was founded by the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Graduate School. The A2I program helps graduate and Ph.D. students enter the industry workforce. The School of Graduate Studies partners with companies and industry leaders to bring their expertise to students and to demonstrate competencies that are highly valued by industry companies.
The program provides activities that will help enhance students’ skills and give them an opportunity to network with corporate leaders. Some topics of discussion may include resume writing, personal branding, project management, communication, and entrepreneurship; however, the discussion is not limited to these topics.
North Carolina Central University School of Graduate Studies understands that some students may have a need for assistance to transition to post-undergraduate collegiate writing. The workshop encourages students to be aware of the conventions of academic writing and attentive to its differences across disciplines.
With the assistance of various instructors within the university, we will discuss writing various forms of academic writing, the role of disciplinary differences in college writing assignments, and a refresher of the basics. There will be an opportunity for students to receive feedback on written submission and methods of elevating their writing skills.
