The goals of the partnership are to utilize the vast resources and polymer expertise within the NSF Soft Matter Triangle MRSEC to aide North Carolina Central (NCCU) in (1) developing a course and laboratory in polymer chemistry; (2) infusing polymer concepts into existing general and physical chemistry courses; (3) integrating learning in these courses with hands-on research experiences in soft matter; (4) widely disseminating the results of the project; and (5) recruiting talented NCCU undergraduate students as research fellows who will work on soft matter research projects at NCCU and the larger Triangle MRSEC community. The project is projected to impact a large number of undergraduates who enroll in these gatekeeper courses for their STEM and related career choices at NCCU. The proposed activities will be externally evaluated for both summative and formative feedback.
