Training and Development
Training and Development
The Office of Human Resources (OHR) training program is designed to create a service culture that supports North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) commitment to providing quality service to all of its workforce. The HR Training consultant dialogs with department leadership to determine the requirements and expectations of each course or workshop. After consultation, training modules will be customized or designed and delivered to accommodate leaderships expressed needs. Visit the University Training Catalog for a buffet of faculty, staff, and management training opportunities that are currently offered for the University.
There are a number of training certifications available throughout the University’s departments, schools, and divisions. These certifications not only provide the essential skills and resources that enhance professional development, they also offer credentials that are recognizable in many arenas throughout the country.
The OHR Training and Development department sponsors “Lunch and Learn Series” throughout the year. A conglomeration of topics and a smorgasbord of presenters make these sessions high-demand training solutions for employees and the University. Additionally, they provide employees with valuable information that can enhance personal growth and catapult knowledge. Join us for an hour of empowerment as you lunch (feel free to bring your own) and learn with the OHR.
University Training Catalog
The Campus-Wide Training and Development Catalog is an online comprehensive training and development resource featuring the types of University training opportunities that are available and facilitated by University departments for the professional and personal development of faculty and staff.
A complete listing of exciting University training opportunities, a standardized description, target audience, and the pre-requisite qualifications for attendance are provided via this resource.
Management Development Institute (MDI)
The North Carolina Central University Management Development Institute (MDI) is an intensive course of instruction designed to educate, develop, nurture, and motivate incumbent and newly appointed University leaders. Eligible management employees are notified and invited to participate by OHR Training. The Institute engages and inspires our management network with an interactive six-week program of leadership topics, case studies, role plays, presentations, and discussions that foster and promote success in the workplace for management. The Office of Human Resources, in partnership with collegiate university constituents and collaborative community affiliates, facilitates the training.
MDI additionally teaches participants to lead, coach, and be an integral part of work teams that define roles, objectives, and responsibilities while building an efficient, effective, and highly motivated management network that engages Eagle excellence and enhances employee morale.
Cohorts are scheduled each semester in sessions of six and meet once per week Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are pre-requisites required in advance of MDI training: (1) Equal Employment Opportunity Diversity Fundamentals (EEODF) and (2) Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Contact OHR Training and Development at 919-530-5148 with your interest or program questions.
Employee Orientation Facilitation
Each month, the training consultant implements and delivers new hire orientation, including presentation compilation and revisions as appropriate and participant guides. The consultant supports all aspects of New Hire Orientation and works in partnership with the OHR Employment, Benefits and Services, EEO, Employee Relations, and Payroll units, as well as the ARMO program in the development of the monthly database of new hires for the University.
The training consultant facilitates the delivery of a hearty welcome to all new hires via an agenda that hosts a variety of session speakers communicating and demonstrating NCCU’s mission, values, and culture. In an ongoing relationship with University departments, the consultant identifies agenda presenters. Each month, the training consultant conducts an orientation survey to monitor and track survey results for reporting to OHR management.
NCCU Listens Program
NCCU Listens is a training and development program designed to solicit employee feedback regarding excellence in customer service. Employees are encouraged to "speak up" regarding experiences they have encountered that embody excellent customer service while working at the University. There are two ways one can participate in the program, online or by paper submission through the NCCU Listens comment drop boxes provided throughout the campus.
Per the NCCU Listens survey, a series of questions are provided to solicit employee responses relative to their encounter and the customer service they received.
Spotlight on Excellence in Customer Service Award
The “Spotlight on Excellence in Customer Service Award” recognizes employees who have demonstrated outstanding customer service by going the extra mile.
The award is determined based on established criteria received through the “NCCU Listens” feedback program. These submissions are received online and/or from “NCCU Listens” comment boxes located throughout campus. Training reviews and records all submissions to identify and select award recipients.
Please note that:
- Submissions must be received via NCCU Listens online or from hard-copy entries submitted via NCCU Listens comment drop boxes strategically located on campus.
- Recognition must be specific to “Excellence in Customer Service.” A detailed scenario demonstration that exemplifies the employee “going the extra mile” to yield positive results is required.
- The employee must have a demonstrated pattern of “Excellence in Customer Service.” A review of the number of compliments vs. complaints determines the final decision.
- Employees are eligible for the award once every 12 months.
ComPsych® workshops provide valuable learning for employees and increase visibility and utilization of the GuidanceResources benefits. Topics are designed and written by ComPsych’s internal staff of psychologists and adult learning experts. These 45- to 60-minute sessions are informative and engaging.
A variety of ComPsych workshop sessions will be offered and scheduled through the Office of Human Resources Lunch and Learn program.
University Leadership Education and Development (ULEAD) Program
Leadership development in the university setting is a collaborative process. Participants learn from our world-renowned faculty, from outside experts, and from each other. They gain the practical insight, knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for leadership effectiveness, through classroom sessions, active assessments of leadership characteristics, and participation in an intensive, practical project that addresses a major campus issue. Then, they apply what they’ve learned in the real laboratory of the workplace – in the office the next morning.
- Expand participants’ leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities, which are critical needs in a changing University environment.
- Increase awareness of professional strengths and developmental needs.
- Network with other leaders at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC Central University to provide ongoing feedback and support systems.
