North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has appointed Yang Liu, Ph.D., as a tenure-track assistant professor in the department of computer information systems within the School of Business, effective July 1, 2024. In addition to this role, he will serve as the Duke Power Endowed Professor at the School of Business.
Liu’s research interests include natural language processing (NLP), artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), social media mining, public health monitoring and pandemic surveillance. As an IBM-HBCU Quantum Center Faculty Fellow, he is exploring quantum computing applications and contributing to workforce development in Quantum Information Science and Engineering. His research examines how individuals use online media to access health-related information and support, utilizing advanced NLP techniques, ML models and time series analysis to study digital data sources such as social media and search engine queries. His work provides valuable insights to inform and improve public health resources and interventions.
Liu has served on multiple Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Conference program committees and has reviewed for more than 20 journals and conferences, including leading venues such as Neural Information Processing Systems, the International Conference on Learning Representations, the International Conference on Machine Learning and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Conference.
Liu holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Automation from Henan Polytechnic University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), both earned in 2018. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in computer science from N.C. A&T in 2020 and 2024, respectively.
