Posted January 30, 2026, 11:56AM

Update Feb. 2, 4:10 p.m.

NCCU Community:

Out of an abundance of caution, the university will operate under Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) of the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 12 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. Travel to and from campus is expected to remain challenging through Tuesday due to cold temperatures. University leadership will continue to assess conditions in and around campus and issue guidance on Feb. 3 if the Condition status will be revised.

Scheduled classes will be held virtually.

EMPLOYEES

Faculty and staff should take reasonable precautions for personal safety.  Non-essential employees are expected to work remotely and coordinate with their managers.

Under Condition 1, “The University remains open, but certain non-mandatory operations may be reduced due to more limited staffing. Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work. All other employees have the option to report late, leave early, or not work at all; however, the employee is responsible for informing his/her supervisory chain in a timely manner of all such decisions. Employees must code available leave for any work time missed during a Condition 1, unless the supervisor authorized off site work arrangements…”

Employees not working during a Condition 1 declaration are required to use personal leave.  Adverse weather leave must be reconciled (made-up) within 90 days. Faculty and staff should reference the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy.

NCCU Community:

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Durham and surrounding areas, effective Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, through Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. There is potential for significant wintry precipitation, including large amounts of snow starting late Friday afternoon, and concerns for power outages and dangerously cold temperatures persisting into early next week.

The university will operate under Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) of the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy effective on Friday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m., through Sunday, Feb. 1, at 11:59 p.m. Classes starting at 4 p.m. or later on Friday, Jan. 30, are cancelled, and all non-essential campus operations are suspended during this period.

Students should work with their professors and employees should work with their managers should this present any challenges.

Residential students who have the ability to leave safely should shelter at home or with family/friends as early as possible on Friday, Jan. 30, due to the potential for city power outages and other hazardous conditions. Students remaining on campus must complete the Remain-on-Campus Notification provided by Residential Life.

If conditions require relocation, students will be directed to report to a designated on-campus location. An Eagle Alert will notify students of the need and process to relocate. Do not relocate on campus unless instructed.

University leadership will continue to assess conditions in and around campus and issue further guidance on operations for the week on Sunday, Feb. 1.
