Professor Dennell Warthen is an accomplished designer, educator, and director with over a decade of experience in the fields of textile and apparel design. As the former proprietor of Ready, Set, Sew Textile Design Studio in Durham, North Carolina, Professor Warthen specialized in creating custom designs and providing advanced-level instructional classes in sewing and apparel design. Her work spanned a wide range of custom projects, from school uniforms and clergy wear to wedding attire and home décor. In addition to overseeing the daily operations of the studio, Professor Warthen was dedicated to delivering high-quality client service while maintaining an organized and creative workspace.
In addition to running a successful business, Professor Warthen has served as the education director at Growing Legacy in Durham, where she was responsible for developing and overseeing the center’s educational programming for all age groups. Her leadership in this role involved collaborating with teachers, administrators, and advisory committees to ensure the highest standards of education were met. Her commitment to continuous improvement is evident in their continued active participation in workshops and seminars to stay updated on the latest educational techniques.
Professor Warthen has also made significant contributions to the academic sector, having taught Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) courses in interior design and nutrition at the Alamance-Burlington School System and Warren County High School. In these roles, they developed comprehensive curricula, lesson plans, and classroom materials, while also providing valuable feedback to students and working closely with parents to monitor student progress. Her ability to integrate technology into the classroom enhanced the learning experience for students and facilitated the mastery of essential design and nutrition concepts.
With a Master of Science in Human Sciences, specializing in Family and Consumer Sciences Textiles and Apparel Design, from North Carolina Central University (NCCU), Professor Warthen has both academic and practical expertise. Her educational background provides a strong foundation for their work as a designer and instructor, and they have applied this knowledge to various teaching roles, including providing instruction at NCCU’s Department of Human Sciences; and now, the Department of Art and Design.
