Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences

Chair's Welcome

Greetings from the Department of Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences (DEEGS)! The strength of our department lies in our faculty and visiting scientists, as well as diverse students and staff, all working together to prepare the next generation for rewarding and impactful careers in the environmental and geoscience fields.

The mission of the Department is to promote intellectual, professional, and personal excellence through the highest quality instruction, research, and service in environmental, earth and geospatial sciences.

DEEGS Education

Education and Training

Students may enroll in a B.S. in Environmental and Geographic Sciences or an M.S. in Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences, with the option of traditional or fully online programs.  DEEGS also offers an accelerated bachelor to master's (ABM) track. Our Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) certificate is the 17th nationally accredited program by the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. DEEGS is only the second HBCU department with an uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) certificate program.

DEEGS Faculty and Students

Our Faculty

The department has eight full-time faculty members with expertise in geospatial science, data science, remote sensing, social geography, environmental science, environmental health, geohazards, and climatology. All faculty members in the department have active research agendas and engage both undergraduate and graduate students in research.

Our Students

Students have presented research results at conferences such as the NCAUG Meeting, the HBCU Meeting on Climate Change, the NC Geography Conference, the American Society for Photogrammetry, and the GEOINT Symposium, American Association of Geographers and American Geophysical Union meetings. Student travel to these meetings is supported by grants and department funding.

Interdisciplinary Research

DEEGS has a strong record of interdisciplinary research involving faculty from other departments at NCCU, as well as other UNC institutions and national and international collaborators. All faculty have active research programs funded by NASA, NSF, DOD, USDA, EPA, and other agencies.

DEEGS Careers

Career Opportunities

We are a career-focused department and endeavor to place all our students in jobs related to their interests. Students have found employment in diverse fields in the corporate sector, in local government and federal government, and in the nonprofit sector.

Degree Programs

The B.S. in Environmental and Geographic Sciences is a 120-credit program providing students with a broad understanding of environmental, earth, and geospatial sciences, focusing on human-earth interaction. The coursework is designed to develop communication, critical thinking, and field and technical skills.

DEEGS B online

The online B.S. in Environmental and Geographic Sciences is a 120-credit program providing students with a broad understanding of geosciences, focusing on human-earth interaction. All courses are online and delivered asynchronously using Canvas as a delivery platform.

The Master of Science in Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences program is designed to provide students with an understanding of natural processes and develop master's level competence in techniques used to solve environmental and geoscience problems.

The online M.S. in Environmental Earth and Geospatial Science is a 30-credit program. All courses are offered asynchronously online, using Canvas as the delivery platform. Note that asynchronous classes may be offered concurrently with on-campus face-to-face classes and allow students an option to join classes synchronously.

Additional Information

Geospatial Intelligence Certificates

The undergraduate and graduate certificates in geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) are housed in the Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences department and are open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at NCCU.

In the summer of 2018, the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) awarded accreditation to our graduate certificate in geospatial intelligence. USGIF accreditation means that our undergraduate geoscience program passed the highest standards for GEOINT curriculum, faculty expertise, and research programs.
