The purpose of the Science and Research Summer Program (SRSP) is to give superior high school students hands-on research experience by working on research projects with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) science professors in many disciplines. The program is supported by the CREST center (NSF support), by the Partnership for Research and Education in nanoMaterials (PREM) between Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and NCCU, by the URC center (NASA support), and by the University of Maryland through the Robust Quantum Simulation award. SRSP is open to students the summer between their junior and senior year of high school. Students are selected from high schools in North Carolina to be involved in this summer research program. It is expected that this experience will have a positive effect on student interest in careers in science technology engineering and math disciplines. The SRSP will offer students an excellent opportunity to experience NCCU as they begin to consider which college they want to attend.

The SPIRIT program (Students Participating in Research, Innovation, and Technology) is an initiative designed to engage students in design thinking and project management, fostering creativity and invention through digital fabrication and computational tools. Its outreach component, the NCCU Fab Lab, offers hands-on, project-based learning at the NCCU Fab Lab. Students gain practical experience with technologies like 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, electronics, and coding. The program emphasizes safety, skill-building, and the creation of both digital and physical artifacts as outcomes of their learning journey. Initially, SIP supported Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School's Engineering Academy, aligning with their NAF Academy of Engineering objectives.
