My Dearest NCCU Family:

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Mabel Royal, a long-time faculty member in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.

Mabel began her career at NCCU serving as a research associate in the Julius L. Chambers Biomedical and Biotechnology Research Institute (JLC-BBRI) in 2009. In 2010, she joined the Biological and Biomedical Sciences faculty, where she was active in teaching and research.

Mabel will be remembered as a caring, hardworking colleague, always positive and strong in faith until her last day.

During this difficult time, students are encouraged to seek support if needed. Counseling appointments can be arranged by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, 2nd Floor, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Drop-in hours are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., although there may be a wait time during these hours. Additionally, crisis management services are offered after 5 p.m. through the same contact number. Faculty and staff may utilize the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.

Details regarding Mabel’s funeral service will be shared when available.

Please keep her family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

In Truth and Service,

Dr. Karrie G. Dixon
Chancellor
