Dear NCCU Family:

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of Mr. James Winston, heating plant maintenance technician in NCCU Facilities Management, on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025.

James served with quiet strength, unwavering dedication and a spirit of teamwork that made a real difference - especially during those long night shifts when his reliability meant so much. His presence, work ethic and kindness will be deeply missed across our community.

During this difficult time, students are encouraged to seek support if needed. Counseling appointments can be arranged by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, 2nd Floor, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Drop-in hours are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., although there may be a wait time during these hours. Additionally, crisis management services are offered after 5 p.m. through the same contact number. Faculty and staff may utilize the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.

James' life will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, located at 901 East F Street, in Butner, N.C. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m., followed by the Celebration of Life service at 12 p.m.

Please keep his family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

In Truth and Service,

Dr. Karrie G. Dixon
Chancellor
