Message from Chancellor Dixon: Fallen Eagle London Powers

Posted August 12, 2025, 12:02PM

Dear NCCU Family,

It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of London Powers, a junior social work major, on Monday, Aug. 11.

A native of Washington, D.C., London was a dedicated member of the University Honors program with aspirations to earn her Master of Social Work degree, focusing on adolescent and mental health. She was actively engaged in campus life and had recently been elected event coordinator for the NCCU Social Work Society for the 2025-26 academic year. She was also preparing to begin her internship at the Durham Center for Senior Life, a role that reflected her passion for serving others.

London’s professors and peers will remember her as a vibrant, hard-working and supportive student who poured her heart into her social work cohort.

In this time of loss, I encourage students and employees to seek support. Counseling services are available by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, second floor. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with drop-in hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please note that there may be a wait during those hours. For immediate crisis support after 5 p.m., please call the same number. Faculty and staff can access support through ComPsych via the university’s HR page.

Funeral services will be shared when available. Please keep her family, friends, classmates and professors in your thoughts and prayers.

In Truth and Service,

Dr. Karrie G. Dixon
Chancellor
