Dear NCCU Family:
I am deeply saddened to share that our Eagle community lost one of its own on Thursday, Aug. 20: Ms. Kianna Jones, a junior behavioral and social sciences major.
Affectively known as ‘Sunshine’, Kianna was a native of Lumberton, North Carolina, whose vibrant spirit touched many lives. She was a dedicated member of Curve Appeal, NCCU’s first full-figured student modeling troupe.
Kianna was also a make-up artist and student ambassador for several clothing brands. But the role she cherished most was being a mother to her 2-year-old daughter. She worked hard to create a bright future for her while pursuing her own dreams with grace, passion and drive.
A visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, from 7-9 p.m. at 306 N. Cedar St., in Lumberton. Her funeral service will be held at Sunday, Sept. 6, at 3 p.m. at Rosenwald Elementary School, 301 Martin Luther King Dr., in Fairmont, North Carolina.
NCCU will observe a moment of silence in Kianna’s memory during the 10:40 Break on Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the NCCU Student Center, giving our community an opportunity to come together, reflect and honor her life.
As we mourn this loss, I encourage anyone who needs support to take advantage of resources available on campus. Students may schedule a counseling appointment by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, second floor, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drop-in hours are available Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. After hours support is available evenings, weekends and university holidays by calling the same number. Faculty and staff may access the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.
