Message from Chancellor Dixon: Fallen Eagle Joshua Tillman

Posted July 24, 2025, 9:22AM

Dear NCCU Family:

With deep sadness, I share the passing of Joshua Tillman, a Master of Public Administration student, who transitioned on Thursday, July 10, and was laid to rest on Friday, July 18, surrounded by loved ones.

Joshua was a bright light within our campus community: kind, intelligent and deeply committed to community service.  During his time at NCCU, he made a lasting impact as a Community Leaders fellow, a graduate fellow with the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development and as a graduate hall coordinator. Joshua aspired to become an economic development professional, using his skills to secure better housing and opportunities for underserved communities. His leadership, compassion and spirit touched many, and his presence will be deeply missed.

As we grieve this loss, please lean on one another and seek support when needed. Counseling services are available in the Student Health Building. Students may call 919-530-7646 or visit the second floor, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drop-in hours are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (please note there may be a short wait). For after-hours crisis support, the same contact number may be used.

Faculty and staff may access confidential counseling and support resources through ComPsych, available on the university’s human resources page.

Please keep Joshua's family, friends, professors and classmates in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

In Truth and Service,

Dr. Karrie G. Dixon
Chancellor
