Dear NCCU Students:

Congratulations Class of 2020!

North Carolina Central University is awarding nearly 1,089 bachelors, masters, Juris Doctor and Ph.D. degrees to Eagles who completed their academic programs. Although our 135th Commencement Exercises are not occurring as planned due to the pandemic, the university community still celebrates your achievements!

Eagles who began as undergraduates in 2016 were introduced to the theme of "A Vision of Excellence." I clearly remember move-ins and the New Student Induction and Eagle Pinning Ceremony; you arrived on the sloping hills and verdant green eager to make an impact with your energy, creativity and intelligence. You leave the nest having made a mark on this esteemed institution, all while also having built new networks and created new opportunities that will set you apart in the marketplace.

I am certain much of the same holds true for our graduate students, including our Legal Eagles (Juris Doctors) and two (Doctoral) Ph.D. graduates. Your newest academic credential will open more doors in your profession or help you in transitioning to a career you’ve been passionately waiting to start.

As our newest alumni, you join more than 37,000 Eagles around the world who are part of North Carolina Central University’s rich legacy. The wings you have earned will allow you to take off smoothly and soar into a future filled with promise.

Today, I am excited to announce that the university will celebrate you by hosting NCCU’s 135th Commencement exercises virtually. This unique ceremony is in addition to inviting you to participate in our December 2020 and May 2021 Commencement exercises. During the ceremony, students’ names will be read by college, school and department. We will honor your accomplishments and celebrate the hard work you’ve put into completing your degree program. More details will be announced next week, to include the date and time that the ceremony will be streamed on the university’s website, Facebook and YouTube channels. We encourage you to invite your family and friends to form watch parties. We will share ideas with you on ways you can enhance your virtual Commencement experience.

The university will mail each graduate two copies of their diploma, one copy of a transcript, honor cords and a few additional surprises. The packages will be mailed the third week of June. If you need a transcript before you receive the mailing, please contact the Registrar’s Office at [email protected] or 919-530-6654.

Graduates, congratulations again as you soar into the next chapter of your lives!

In Truth and Service,

Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D.

Chancellor
