Damon Williams Named Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety for North Carolina Central University

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has named Mr. Damon Williams as chief of police and director of public safety, beginning July 13, 2020. Chief Williams will report to Ms. Akua Matherson, interim vice chancellor of Administration and Finance.

In this role, Chief Williams leads a full service CALEA accredited Department of Police and Public Safety handling law enforcement and investigation of all crimes, parking regulation and enforcement, emergency management and emergency communications. He organizes, directs and supervises the day-to-day activities of the on-going comprehensive campus police and public safety programs on NCCU’s campus. Chief Williams is also responsible for administering the university’s compliance with the Clery Act and its requirements.

Damon WilliamsChief Williams has over 15 years of law enforcement experience. He previously led several municipal police departments. Prior to his career in law enforcement, Chief Williams was an educator for the Moore County School System. 

As a member of the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, Chief Williams served as its Region 2 director before beginning joining the executive board of directors. He also chairs the training committee and serves on the mental health committee.  Chief Williams is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Association of Chiefs of Police and serves on several committees for the State of North Carolina. He has been a strong proponent of the Police Activities League and practices a philosophy of community policing.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Fayetteville State University, Chief Williams received a master’s degree in business administration from Columbia Southern University. 

Chief Williams noted: “I am excited to serve the North Carolina Central University community. A collaborative and community-centered approach is required to keep our campus safe. Together with our students, faculty, staff and members of the Police Department, we can ensure we maintain a safe educational and work environment.”
