Dear NCCU Community,

I am pleased to share exciting news that reflects the strength, resilience, and forward momentum of our university. Moody’s Investors Service has affirmed North Carolina Central University’s A3 issuer and revenue bond rating, maintaining a stable outlook. In its release, Moody’s noted that “leadership changes, including to financial policy under our ESG framework, are a key driver of the affirmation.” With the uncertainty around higher education funding, this rating and the confidence expressed in our leadership serve as a powerful external validation of NCCU’s new direction—one focused on a solid financial foundation and long-term fiscal health.

New reforms and stronger internal controls are helping to restore trust and stability in both our financial and administrative operations. Moody’s analysis recognized our team’s progress in strengthening financial oversight, internal controls, and aligning practices with strong ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards.

This recognition would not be possible without the unwavering commitment of our faculty, staff, students, and partners. Your dedication to excellence, accountability, and innovation is the heartbeat of NCCU. The report also acknowledged the continued support from the North Carolina General Assembly, UNC Board of Governors, UNC System President Peter Hans, and his team—critical assets that, thanks to our collective advocacy, we are well-positioned to maximize for future growth.

While this is a moment to celebrate, we must not become complacent. Important work remains as we focus on improving liquidity, enhancing business processes,  and focusing on growing NCCU’s position nationally. This affirmation from an independent, trusted agency reassures us that we are on the right path—and it challenges us to keep moving forward with purpose and discipline.

Thank you to the NCCU Board of Trustees, NCCU community, and alumni for your continued dedication and belief in our shared vision. I am confident that we will continue to soar.

In Truth and Service,
Karrie G. Dixon, Chancellor
