With a career rooted in student services, multicultural engagement and now student wellness, LaMarcus D. Howard, Ph.D., has spent nearly two decades dedicated to creating accessible, comprehensive environments where students can thrive. As the associate vice chancellor for student health and wellness at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), he is leading the charge in reshaping how institutions think about—and act on—student well-being.

"In the wake of the pandemic, higher education began to recognize the critical importance of investing in student health and well-being," he said.

His leadership in disability services helped him see the broader landscape of accessibility, setting the foundation for his current role at NCCU. Today, he oversees a division that addresses the physical, emotional and mental wellness of students, integrating these pillars into the core of university life.

“Moving from a mid-level professional to a senior administrator hasn’t been easy,” he said. “I had to shift from a ‘boots on the ground’ approach to one that trusts and empowers others.” His team-first philosophy is rooted in active listening, intentional delegation and strategic support.

A proud mental health advocate, Howard brings vulnerability and strength to the forefront. His signature presentations, such as Trailblazers Unmasked and The Survivor’s Mindset, are deeply personal explorations of Black male mental health. “Being a Black male, I understand firsthand the stigma and silence around mental health,” he said. “These talks are about dismantling that, and building spaces of resilience, healing and empowerment.”

Through initiatives like Blueprint for Impact, Howard emphasizes the importance of setting clear goals aligned with institutional priorities while remaining agile in the face of change. “Flexibility is key,” he said. “We must be prepared to pivot when student needs shift or university priorities evolve.”

Whether speaking with students, parents, or colleagues, Howard’s message is consistent: meet people where they are. “Every day on campus is a chance to connect with someone new,” he said. “Active listening and tailored communication are how trust and transformation happen.”

One of his proudest moments came during NCCU’s Division of Student Affairs end-of-year celebration. Watching his team enjoy the day, reminded him of why he serves in higher education. “We work hard and play harder. Seeing that joy and commitment affirmed everything.”

Looking ahead, Howard is optimistic. With student wellness embedded in NCCU’s 2025–2030 strategic plan, he sees an exciting future for holistic student support. “Our goal is to ensure every student has what they need—academically, emotionally, and personally—to thrive.”

Still, he remains grounded in his own self-care. From regular workouts to mindfulness practices and therapy, Howard models the balance he encourages others to seek. “I’m my best when my mind, body, and soul are aligned.”
