The North Carolina Central University Department of Theatre proudly launches its historic 75th anniversary season with FAME – The Musical, directed by Dr. Kristi Johnson, with music direction by Carolyn Colquitt and choreography by Willie Hinton. The show will run from Oct. 9 to 12 in the University Theatre.
In commemoration of this milestone year, the production is presented in honor of Dr. Linda Norfleet, who served as department chair for more than 20 years before becoming dean of the College of Arts and Science. Dr. Norfleet’s leadership shaped generations of theatre artists and expanded the department’s legacy of excellence, making her a fitting figure to celebrate as this commemorative season begins.
Set in New York City’s famed High School for the Performing Arts, FAME – The Musical follows the final class of students from 1990 to 1994. With sincerity, humor, and dramatic flair, the show captures their triumphs, struggles, and tempestuous relationships while highlighting the relentless passion and dedication it takes to pursue a career in the performing arts.
The 75th season will continue with a series of productions that reflect the department’s artistry, history, and commitment to telling powerful stories. Upcoming shows include Home by Samm-Art Williams, Steal Away Home by Aurand Harris, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, adapted by Lawrence Holder.
Adding even more significance, FAME was the final show Dr. Norfleet directed before her retirement — making its return to the NCCU stage not only a tribute to her enduring impact, but also a powerful full-circle moment for the department’s history. With this production, NCCU Theatre shines a spotlight on its vibrant past while looking boldly toward the future — celebrating 75 years of artistry, education, and legacy on the stage.
