Black Women and Politics in Brazil and the USA Symposium

In Brazil and the United States, Black women are often viewed as “Saviors of the Nation” who have the potential to determine presidential and state elections. Black women are important in electoral politics and as agents of change serving their communities as activists and leaders. This symposium examines the role Black women play as they advocate for change and human rights and sustain their communities in Brazil and the United States.
Brazil is second to Nigeria as having the largest population of African descendants. Yet, Afro-Brazilians, especially Afro-Brazilian women, are significantly underrepresented in electoral politics. However, underrepresentation does not mean they have no influence on political agendas and society. Assassinated in 2018, Marielle Franco was a leading voice against the militarization of favela communities in Rio de Janeiro and exemplifies Black women’s continual resistance to systems of oppression. This symposium focuses on the intersection of race, class and gender as it will bring together Black women politicians, activists and scholars from Brazil and the United States to discuss the important role of Black women in two of the world’s largest democracies.
