The NCCU Jazz Studies Program and Jazz Percussion Professor Thomas Taylor will host the 11th annual Give the Drummer Some Benefit Concert and Workshops on Sunday, August 27, 2023.
The event will move off campus this year and will be held at the Sharp Nine Gallery, located at 4608 Industry Ln, Durham, NC, 27713.
The guest artist this year is New Orleans-native Herlin Riley! Alumni performers are Jasmine Best, Scott Bruce and Theous Jones. Professor Thomas Taylor’s group will open the concert and Herlin’s group will be the final performer of the night.
Workshop presenters are:
- Thomas Taylor: Sticks, Cymbals, and Snare: Getting Your Hands and Ears Together for Jazz Playing
- Scott Bruce: Elvin Jones's Approach to the Drumset as Illustrated through "In Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album"
- Larry Q. Draughn Jr.: Upbeats and Uplifting Rhythms from Gospel Music in Jazz
- Jeremy BEAN Clemons and Iajhi Hampden will present a joint workshop
- Herlin Riley: Groove with “the Groove Master!"
