Nakia C Davis
Nakia C. Davis is a native of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997 and received her J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2001. After becoming a licensed attorney, she was afforded the opportunity to work with several reputable law firms in Durham, North Carolina, where she was able to cultivate and enhance her analytical and litigation skills in family law. On December 19, 2005, she established the Law Office of Nakia C. Davis, which provided her with the opportunity to establish a practice that focused solely on the area of family law.
In August of 2006, she joined the North Carolina Central University School of Law faculty as an adjunct professor for the Family Law Clinic and became an assistant visiting professor in 2010. She joined the faculty as an assistant clinical professor in 2012, earning a promotion to associate clinical professor in 2017. She was promoted to senior clinical professor in 2020, which is the highest promotion that can be earned by a clinical professor at the law school. In 2022, she was appointed by the late Dean Browne C. Lewis as the associate dean of clinical legal education and experiential learning of the Clinical Legal Education Program.
Amongst other professional duties, she has served as a co-director/facilitator of the NCCU School of Law Virtual Justice Project. She has served as the co-director of the Performance-Based Aptitude Program (PBAP) since 2010, which provided her the opportunity to attend law school. She was honored to serve as the co-chair of the ABA Site Visit Preparation Committee in 2018–2019, working closely with Assistant Dean Adrienne Meddock to host the ABA site team responsible for assessing the continued accreditation of the law school.
She served as the clinical director and supervising attorney of the Family Law Clinic for the Clinical Legal Education Program until Spring of 2022. She also teaches Family Relations, which is a doctrinal, bar-tested course, and Pleadings and Practice with an emphasis on family law, which is an experiential course.
She is active in the legal community in various capacities, placing an emphasis on providing holistic legal services to the underserved and underrepresented. She has served as the president of the Durham County Family Bar, a member of the Board of Directors for the Durham County Bar Association, and a member of various committees of the North Carolina Bar Association. As it relates to the academic community, she serves on various committees of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA) and the American Bar Association.
Her scholarship interests are in the areas of family law and the advancement of legal education through practical skills. She has been a panelist and presenter on several occasions in various legal and academic settings, addressing various experiential education and leadership topics at the Southeastern Association of Law Schools and AALS Annual Meeting and AALS Clinical Conference. In 2024, she was a TEDx speaker at TEDx Morris Brown College.
In her spare time, she enjoys mentoring, traveling, and cooking for family and friends.
