Lorna E. Grant, Ph.D., M.S.W., is a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and director of the Graduate Program at North Carolina Central University. She has worked in various settings with students and youths. She began her higher education teaching at the University of the West Indies and the Community College system in Jamaica. Thereafter, she taught at Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia, and North Carolina Central University, North Carolina.
She has over 25 publications and book chapters, in refereed journals and books. Along with two of her colleagues, she has two edited books. Topics published include youth interaction with law enforcement, youth gangs, delinquency in schools, human trafficking, child abuse, juvenile violence, policing, incarcerated parents, crime and tourism in the Caribbean, gun violence in the Caribbean, and money laundering in the Caribbean. Books edited include "Youth Crime and Violence in the Caribbean" and "Crime and Violence in the Caribbean: Lessons from Jamaica."
Her professional memberships include the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). She is the chair of the Caribbean Crime Prevention Group, in which capacity she has represented many criminal justice educators across the Caribbean. She is a past president of the Juvenile Justice Section of ACJS and executive counselor of the Women and Minority (ASC). Currently, she serves as the chair of the Student Affairs Committee (ACJS) and chair of NCCU’s Graduate and Undergraduate Symposium. Additionally, she serves as an executive council member and national advisor of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honor society.
She has offered advice internationally on juvenile justice issues. She is also a recipient of the North Carolina Central University’s 2022 Chancellor Award for Chancellor’s Award for Voluntarism and Dedicated Service to North Carolina Central University. Other awards received include the North Carolina Excellence in Teaching Award, the NCCU Faculty Senate Exceptional Service Award, and Alpha Phi Sigma National Advisor of the Year Award.
