Javier Alvarez Jaimes
Dr. Alvarez-Jaimes joined North Carolina Central University in 2022 after his tenure at the University of Georgia and Eastern Kentucky University. At NCCU, he holds a seat on the faculty senate.
His research focuses on the dynamic intersections of society, politics and urban spaces. Specifically, he delves into Latin American popular cultures and their role in shaping public discourse through mediums like graffiti and hip-hop. As a studio-trained artist, he has contributed murals in Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Georgia and Kentucky, enriching the perspectives he brings to his courses.
Beyond the academic realm, Dr. Alvarez-Jaimes actively engages with the broader community, serving as a board member of the City of Durham Human Relations Commission.
He is the recipient of the 2023 College Educators Research Fellowship from the UNC-Duke Consortium of Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
