D. Braxton Mercer
Dr. D. Braxton Mercer serves as the assistant director of public safety at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he provides oversight of campus security technologies, including access control systems, video surveillance infrastructure, mass notification platforms, and emergency communication operations, and Clery compliance. He also serves as a strategic advisor in matters of campus safety and risk management. With over ten years of experience in higher education and public safety administration, Dr. Mercer plays a vital role in aligning safety practices with institutional priorities and creating a secure and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
In addition to his administrative leadership, Dr. Mercer is committed to academic instruction and student development. He serves as an adjunct faculty member at NCCU, Wake Technical Community College, and Durham Technical Community College, where he teaches courses in business and information technology. He is known for integrating real-world experience with engaging instruction that prepares students for success in both their academic and professional pursuits.
Dr. Mercer holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from High Point University. He is also a proud three-time graduate of NCCU, having earned a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), a Master of Information Science (M.I.S.), and a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.). Additionally, he holds an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree from Pitt Community College.
Beyond his formal roles in public safety and academia, Dr. Mercer is deeply involved in student life. He serves as faculty advisor to NCCU’s Worship and Praise Inspirational Gospel Choir (WPI), where he supports students in cultivating their gifts in music, leadership, and service. Through this platform, he fosters community engagement, spiritual growth, and cultural expression among the student body.
Outside of the university setting, Dr. Mercer is an ordained minister and serves as associate pastor at Divine Anointing Church International in Greenville, NC. He also ministers at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor, NC. Through these ministries, he teaches, preaches, and mentors others with a heart for servant leadership, spiritual growth, and community transformation.
Known for his authenticity, collaborative spirit, and student-centered approach, Dr. Mercer continues to serve with excellence in all areas of his work — bridging the gap between safety, scholarship, and service.
