Being a Desk Assistant

This is a student leadership position responsible for serving as a primary point of contact for the students within a residence hall. The desk assistant's primary function is to provide a superior level of customer service by serving as a resource to students. Desk assistants monitor and maintain residence hall security, assist with lock-out requests, and assist in providing a safe atmosphere, as well as performing other administrative tasks.

1. Abide by all policies and procedures as indicated in the Desk Assistant Manual.
2. Support, communicate, enforce and abide by all University and departmental policies and procedures.
3. Assist the graduate hall coordinator and area coordinator with administrative tasks as assigned.
4. Assist with the opening, closing and transition of residence halls.
5. Serve as a customer service representative for the residence hall, which includes (but is not limited to) greeting guests, answering phones, answering questions and providing necessary follow-up.
6. Assist residents, guests and the university community as a resource for accurate information concerning Residential Life and University operations.
7. Serve as a Campus Security Authority officer (obligated to report all violations of the NCCU code of conduct and state and federal laws, as well as cases of sexual misconduct, sexual assault and sexual harassment, using the Maxient reporting software).
8. Support residence hall staff in emergencies and crises.
9. Report all emergencies and crises to the appropriate staff and complete required documentation.
10. Comply with University confidentiality requirements.
11. Participate in all department trainings, which include (but are not limited to) semester trainings and in-service trainings.
12. Participate in all meeting activities, which include (but are not limited to) staff and one-on-one meetings with supervisors.
13. Perform other duties consistent with the purpose of the position as assigned.

1. Have a minimum cumulative NCCU grade point average of 2.5 at the time of application (continuing students).
2. Maintain a minimum cumulative NCCU grade point average of 2.5 during the period of employment.
3. Must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct.
4. Must be available to work on weekends (desk attendants are required to participate in a biweekly rotation weekend schedule).

The Department of Residential Life provides desk assistants (DAs) a compensation package that includes an hourly wage of $8.50 an hour.

Note: Desk assistants can work a maximum of 20 hours a week.

1. Abide by all policies and procedures as indicated in the Desk Assistant Manual.
2. Support, communicate, enforce, and abide by all University and Departmental policies and procedures.
3. Conduct routine patrols of residence halls and designated residential areas.
4. Monitor building entrances and ensure only authorized individuals enter facilities.
5. Enforce campus safety policies and community standards.
6. Respond promptly to incidents, disturbances, and emergency situations along side Resident Assistants and Coordinators.
7. Serve as a visible presence to deter inappropriate or unsafe behavior.
8. Document incidents and complete detailed reports before the end of each shift.
9. Assist students with directions, questions, or safety concerns.
10. Check doors, windows, and security systems to ensure facilities are secured.
11. Report maintenance concerns (broken locks, lighting issues, hazards) to appropriate departments.
12. Support Residence Life staff during lockouts, noise complaints, and policy violations.
13. Assist the Graduate Hall Coordinator and Area Coordinator with administrative tasks as assigned.

4. Must be available to work on nights and weekends (Desk Attendants are required to participate in a biweekly rotation weekend schedule).

The Department of Residential Life provides night-time desk assistants (NTDAs) a compensation package that includes an hourly wage of $12-$15 an hour.

Note: Night-time desk assistants can work a maximum of 20 hours a week.
