Formulation and Packaging Science, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Formulation and Packaging Science major is an interdisciplinary program involve developing, formulating, and testing cosmetics and personal care products. This program exposes students to the chemical composition of marketed cosmetic products and will place a strong emphasis on the research, design and formulation of personal care and beauty products. Formulation and Packaging Science majors will also be exposed to the art and business of cosmetics in various required courses. Additionally, students in this major will learn about regulations and how to assess products’ safety, performance, and quality.

The mission of this course is to equip students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to design, develop, and evaluate effective packaging and formulation systems. Students will learn to apply scientific principles to create stable, safe, and marketable products that meet industry standards.

A course on packaging and formulation is a highly interdisciplinary study, combining principles from chemistry, engineering, and design to address a wide range of topics essential for creating successful products, with a special emphasis on cosmetics and cosmeceuticals.

Product Formulation and Stability: 

The course is centered on the science of creating stable, safe, and effective formulations. Students learn about the chemistry of active ingredients, excipients, and delivery systems, with a specific focus on unique challenges and understanding of preventing issues like oxidation, microbial growth, and ingredient degradation.

The skills of a formulation and packaging professional are essential in countless industries. You won't be limited to one industry; you could work on:

• Cosmeceuticals and personal care: Developing new anti-aging creams, sunscreens, or makeup.
• Pharmaceuticals: Creating stable drug formulations and child-proof, tamper-evident packaging.
• Food Science: Formulating new flavors or preservatives and designing packaging that extends shelf life or preservatives and designing packaging that extends shelf life.
