Environmental Health and Safety Scope of Service

• Provides oversight of activities involving biohazardous and infectious agents
• Conducts risk assessments to determine proper mitigation measures and controls
• Consults and trains on aspects of biological safety, biosafety cabinets, and packaging and shipping of biohazardous agents
• Oversees biohazardous waste management and disposal program
• Participates in laboratory safety inspections

• Provides surveillance of activities involving chemical and toxicological substances 
• Mitigates and controls personnel exposures to chemical hazards
• Provides consultative services and training to laboratory personnel on proper handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, laboratory chemical hoods, engineering controls, safety equipment and personal protective clothing
• Manages chemical waste disposal program
• Participates in laboratory safety inspections

• Enforces North Carolina building and fire codes
• Investigates fire near misses and incidents
• Develops and trains individuals on evacuation procedures
• Maintains alarm and extinguishing systems

• Ensures indoor campus environments are conducive to good health and well-being by recognizing, evaluating and controlling environmental health and safety hazards
• Works with Facilities personnel to find ways to keep historical buildings functional while protecting employee health
• Planning, construction and startup of new and renovated buildings to anticipate and eliminate building-related health issues

• Provides ergonomic assessments and suggestions
• Administers the Respiratory Protection Program, including fit-testing services and documentation
• Provides general safety training
• Administers Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out, Forklift, and other safety plans and training for campus partners

Risk Management assists NCCU stakeholders in managing physical, financial, operational and reputation risk through early identification and appropriate avoidance, mitigation and risk transfer. Risk Management collaborates with campus and external partners to promote an integrated approach to problem-solving in the following areas:

• Contract review (to ensure insurance issues are sufficient)
• Claims management
• Risk management consultations
