CBSS Hosts Symposium on Poverty and Health Oct. 10

North Carolina Central University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will host a symposium on poverty and health on campus Friday, Oct. 10.

The symposium's title is The Social Determinants of Health, and it is free and open to the public.

On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. in B.N. Duke Auditorium on Fayetteville Street. Sessions begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 12:30 p.m.

The keynote address will be presented by Congressman G.K. Butterfield, with panel discussions to follow.

Panel topics will include the Social Determinants of Health; the Social Constructs of Poverty; and Managing Poverty: Setting the Framework from a Citizens Perspective.

Among panel participants will be Tara Myers, deputy secretary for human resources at the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services; Johnathan Livingston, Ph.D., and John Sollers, Ph.D., from the NCCU Department of Psychology; Redford Williams, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University; Michael Richards,  practicing physician at Novant Health Durham Medical Associates; Joanne F. Pierce, M.A., MPH, deputy public health director for the Durham County Department of Public Health, and others.
