Student SmilingFor many students the first year of college is a monumental test of learning and social skills that impact the rest of their college career.  For that reason, a student’s early collegiate experience plays an intricate part in success during subsequent years.  Unfortunately, an average of 29-percent of first-year college students at four-year colleges and universities do not start their second year of school *(ACT, 2004).  The statistics continue to disappoint when looking at the number of students who complete their degree in 4 to 5 years.

Many of the nation’s institutions of higher education seek to attract and retain students, and NCCU is no different.  As an academic community, it is imperative to retain and graduate those students by providing a stellar educational and social experience beginning with the first year.

In 2007, Chancellor Charlie Nelms suggested a reorganization of the University to include a new University College as a means to facilitate and enhance the successful transition of first-year experiences of all first-time freshmen and new undergraduate transfer students.  The goal of the redesigned University College is to increase the likelihood of college success in the primary years of college by providing innovative learning experiences through focusing on academic excellence, orientation, transition and retention.
