Students who successfully complete the University Honors Program requirements will receive the academic distinction of "University Honors Program" designated on their official academic transcript, giving their transcripts premium value when the students apply for graduate programs and professional employment. A special recognition dinner is also held each year for students who complete the program and for those who earn a 4.0 grade point average in at least one semester during the previous calendar year.
Students in the University Honors Program receive an enriched intellectual and academic experience in a diverse community of highly motivated peers. Students take challenging honors sections of university courses. They also engage in honors community leadership activities that allow them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problem solving and leadership.
Honors students receive centrally located honors housing that provides an optimal living and learning environment, access to high-tech media, computer and learning technology, and special copying and faxing privileges. Students in the Honors Living and Learning Community are able to support and encourage one another through a close-knit community, stimulating activities and discussions, student study sessions and an honors residential library.
Students receive specialized intellectual, cultural and professional development, including participation in forums with faculty and guest lectures. They attend professional conferences where academic research and projects are presented and professional networks are fostered. The program also facilitates professional branding through a professional development program that includes workshops on resume-writing and interviewing skills, culminating in mock interviews with regional, national and global corporations.
Students receive specialized advising and support for application to prestigious post-graduate programs, fellowships and scholarships, as well as test preparation for graduate and professional school exams.
Students are encouraged to participate in study-abroad opportunities and inter-institutional coursework at major universities, including in the Research Triangle. Several institutions offer courses that put students in contact with others with whom they may later enroll in graduate or professional school.
The University Honors Program offers special assistance to students in identifying university scholarships for which they may qualify, and offers assistance in acquiring academic resources such as instructional books and other resources.
