Master of Education - Orientation and Mobility Program

North Carolina Central University offers a program of study in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) as part of the Visual Impairment Training Program (VITP).  Students can complete a Master’s of Education (MEd) program along with the O&M certification program. The program’s courses combine on-line and on-campus components to effectively train professionals to serve the needs of children and adults with visual impairments.  O&M instruction promotes safe, effective, and independent travel.

Students are admitted to the O&M program as part of a fall cohort that they continue with through fall, spring, and summer courses.  The program also requires students to be on campus or the surrounding areas for face-to-face instruction on specific weekends through the fall and spring and anytime during the summer. As part of the O&M program, students are required to complete a 350-hour internship as required for certification by the Academy for Certification of Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).  After attaining certification, students would be eligible for employment as an O&M Specialist through school districts, schools for the blind, rehabilitation agencies, and VA Hospitals.

With certification from ACVREP, O&M Specialists are qualified to provide services related to:

  • Assessment of functional vision, O&M skills, and travel abilities
  • Sensory development and motor skills
  • Use of mobility devices including the long cane and dog guides
  • Use of technology devices including GPS
  • Self-determination and self-advocacy
  • Independent street crossings, bus travel, and travel in business environments
