NCCU's Centennial Website Launch
Published: Thursday, August 27, 2009

On September 1st, NCCU launches a new Website to commemorate the university’s Centennial year and to invite alumni, students and friends to join in the celebration. The site, located at http://www.nccu.edu/centennial, will offer an online portal to North Carolina Central University’s history in Durham as well as a glimpse into the future of the institution. “This University has touched a myriad of lives and strengthened communities worldwide,” said Charlie Nelms, chancellor of North Carolina Central University. “James E. Shepard, the founder of this institution was a visionary. He looked into the future and saw what education would mean to people of color. And, 100 years later, NCCU is a testament to his insight.”

There will be an opportunity for alumni to add their stories of achievement to the archives and legacy of this university. All visitors to the site will be invited to share about the role NCCU played in their personal histories. “We’re reaching out to fellow alumni to tell us how NCCU impacted their lives and careers,” said Carlton Thornton Class of 1994, member of the Centennial Alumni Committee and president of the Durham Alumni Chapter. “The Centennial is truly a celebration of what we have become.”

The site will also serve as the central portal of information throughout the Centennial for events, including cultural and educational opportunities. “NCCU invites students, alumni, and the public to learn more about the university’s mission and its storied history,” said Centennial Committee Co-Chair Bill Evans. “The launch of this site is a resource for news about Centennial activities and the beginning of a remarkable year of celebration.”
