Wearing NCCU paraphernalia and organization t-shirts, North Carolina Central University’s family, scattered around campus helping students move into their residence halls. Chancellor Charlie Nelms, faculty, staff and student groups, pulled suitcases and carried containers full of dorm supplies.
Christy Burroughs, a District of Columbia native and business management major, traveled four hours to NCCU because “it’s a great school.” Her mother, Tracey Burroughs, admitted that she is “very unhappy about the distance.”
Among the 1324 freshmen to move in, many learned about NCCU from family and friends, while others heard from high school guidance counselors and sports team coaches.
“I am extremely proud that he is fulfilling his dream of playing football in college, “ said Roger Gwinn, father of freshman Dustin Gwinn. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Gwinn was recruited to play football at NCCU and is interested in studying recreational sports management.
Due to the enrollment increase of freshmen for the 2009-2010 academic year, NCCU has partnered with Durham’s Millennium Hotel to house 300 juniors, seniors, graduate, and law students. This arrangement will consume about half of the hotel’s capacity.
“I’m happy to have housing,” said computer information systems junior Michael Lee.
Accounting junior Brittany Hunter has lived in the Millennium Hotel for a few days and said, “the hotel staff is very friendly. I like the Millennium because I only have to share my bathroom with one person.”
“Helping students move in is an excellent way to meet new students and to convey to their parents that we really are a family,” said Chancellor Nelms.
