NCCU Named to Presidential Community Service Honor Roll
Published: Friday, June 19, 2009

North Carolina Central University was recently named to The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The University was honored recently at the annual meeting of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C.

The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.  The distinction honors institutions that have a high level of participation in service activities.

NCCU requires all full-time undergraduate students to complete fifteen hours of academic community service learning per semester. NCCU was one of the first universities in the University of North Carolina system to require community service as a graduation requirement.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is a collaboration of The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Education. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America, an initiative that supports service learning in schools, higher education institutions, and community-based organizations.
