Message from Chancellor: Fallen Eagle, DeAndre Ballard

DeAndre Ballard

Dear NCCU Community:

I am saddened to inform you of the passing of a beloved Eagle, DeAndre M. Ballard, 23, a senior physical education major. Mr. Ballard passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 18, due to an incident that is under an open investigation by the Durham Police Department.  The incident occurred near his off-campus apartment in Durham on Monday, Sept. 17. He was identified by a medical examiner today, Sept. 21.

A native of New Bern, N.C., Mr. Ballard was preparing to graduate in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a concentration in fitness and wellness. He was a proud member of NCCU’s Bon Vivant Fashion Society and served as Mr. Bon Vivant Fashion Society during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Naturally, this sudden loss impacts his family greatly, as well as his many friends, his roommates and the entire NCCU community. I ask that we stand together in solidarity during this difficult time and collectively keep DeAndre Ballard and his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

University leaders recognize that this period may be an emotionally stressful time for many on our campus. Grief counselors from the Office of Spiritual Development and Dialogue will be available at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 21, in the A.E. Student Union, Room 144. An on-call counselor from the Student Counseling Center is available 24 hours a day by calling 919-530-6106.

A vigil for DeAndre M. Ballard will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m., in the A.E. Student Union lobby.

More information regarding funeral arrangements will be shared when available.

In Truth and Service,

Johnson O. Akinleye
