Say Y.E.S. to the SECC Combined Campaign

Campaign Overview

Say Y.E.S. to the SECC Combined Campaign

The 2016-2017 employee-giving season at North Carolina Central University now provides our faculty and staff the opportunity to financially support the university and our community through a unified donation.

Each year, our Eagle family is asked to make a gift both to the university through the faculty and staff initiative, now called the Yearly Employee Support (Y.E.S.) Campaign, as well as to the community through the State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC). This year we have merged those campaigns and are asking you to say Y.E.S. to SECC!  The campaign will run from Nov.1 through Dec. 16 for a targeted eight-week period.

Combining these campaigns allows us to ask employees to give just once and provides a more focused timeline for both appeals. Employees can use payroll deduction for both campaigns, if they desire to do so.

The Goal

This year’s goal is ambitious but attainable: a 76-percent participation rate for employee giving to NCCU and a minimum of a $25,000 campus-wide contribution to the SECC community charities.

For questions about either campaign, speak with your department volunteer or contact Tyler Wicks, associate director of annual giving, at 919-530-7404 or tgwicks@nccu.edu

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to say Y.E.S. to SECC?

This year we have combined the Yearly Employees Support campaign (Y.E.S.) with the State Employee Combined Campaign (SECC). If you traditionally give to NCCU directly through either a payroll deduction or a direct gift, you can still do this. If you traditionally give to charities through the SECC, you can continue to do this, also.  However, this year you have the option of combining the two by using the SECC form and choosing 1568 for the NCCU Foundation or 1725 for WNCU Radio, along with the external charity of your choice. You will be able to designate a separate amount for each.

Who can contribute?

Virtually all state employees and retirees are eligible to participate in both Y.E.S. and the SECC. Employees may give by cash, check, credit card or payroll deduction.

Do  I  need  to  fill  out  another  pledge  form  for  this  year’s  pledge  if  I  have  given  in  the  past ?

Yes. A new form or online pledge (ePledge) must be completed every year for the SECC campaign.  If you are currently on payroll deduction for NCCU, you only need to complete a new giving form for NCCU should you wish to upgrade your gift amount.

What if I already designate my gift to other charities within the SECC?

You can continue to designate your gift to any charity you wish. Giving is a personal decision and the reasons we give are as diverse as we are. What’s new this year as that when you give to the NCCU Foundation or WNCU, you have the opportunity to do so through the SECC. If traditionally you give to NCCU and SECC, you now have the ability to support both campaigns simultaneously.

Can I specify where my contribution will go?

Yes. Whether you are giving to NCCU directly or through the SECC campaign, you can specify your area of support.

If I have already made a gift to NCCU this year, will it count towards the campaign?

Gifts are counted by fiscal year. If you have made a gift since July 1, 2016, your gift will count in this campaign.

Are contributions tax deductible?

Yes. You may need documentation to support your contribution, depending on the amount you pledge. Consult with your accountant or tax advisor for details.

What happens to my contribution if I do not specify my designation?

For the Y.E.S. campaign, undesignated gifts go into the annual fund to be used wherever the need is greatest. For the SECC campaign, regulations specify that all undesignated gifts be proportionately distributed. So if Charity A receives 5 percent of designated pledges, then Charity A will also receive 5 percent of undesignated pledges.

What is the duration of my payroll deduction and when does it begin?

All SECC deductions will begin in in January 2017 and continue through December 2017. NCCU deductions begin as you specify on the donor form.

How much should I give?

The amount you give is entirely up to you. No gift is too small. What matters most is your participation in the campaign.

We would like every member of the Eagle family to embrace the idea of Every Eagle. Every Year. every gift is important, no matter the size.

What percentage of my funds to SECC goes to the charity?

Approximately 90 percent percent of funds given through the SECC campaign will go to the designated charity.
