North Carolina Central University welcomed a new member to the Board of Trustees as an appointee of the Governor of the State of North Carolina, Beverly Perdue.
Carlton E. Thornton, Jr. is the vice president of the Agency of America, Inc., which is a full service insurance company in South Hill, Va. Thornton graduated cum laude from NCCU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1994.
Thornton is eager to serve and has a clear vision of his mission. “My role as a member of the Board of Trustees is to advise the Chancellor on how best to enhance the quality of our fiscal and human resources to enhance the educational experience of our students.”
Thornton has long been involved in the inner workings of NCCU. He is the president of the Durham chapter of the university’s Alumni Association and National Homecoming chair. “We are in the unique position of serving a diverse and non-traditional student population. We must continue to provide an environment that educates the whole person for entry into that brave new world,” said Thornton.
