Famed writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston taught drama at NCCU in 1939 after traveling to Jamaica (1936), Haiti (1937) and later Honduras (1947).
Pictured right, Brazilian Anielle Francisco is a 2009 NCCU Journalism/English graduate who played volleyball and pledged Delta Sigma Theta (Alpha Lambda). From the favela Complexo da Maré in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone, she soared to become Brasil’s first Minister of Racial Equality. Also pictured left is Sônia Bone de Souza Silva Santos, Brasil's Minister of Indigenous Peoples.
Dr. Layla Brown is a 2009 NCCU History graduate and Northeastern University assistant professor of Cultural Anthropology and Africana Studies. Her research focuses on pan-African, socialist and feminist social movements in Venezuela, the US and the broader African diaspora.

A 1913 NCCU graduate, Malawian Dr. Daniel Sharpe Malekebu was born in Chiradzulu, Blantyre District, and became a medical doctor, anti-colonial activist and president of the National Baptist Assembly of Africa. A 2009 NCCU History graduate and anthropologist of religion, Dr. Youssef Carter is a UNC-Chapel Hill assistant professor researching Sufism and Islam throughout West Africa and the U.S.
