1.  Purpose

1.1 The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is the accrediting body for North Carolina Central University. Within the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement (Approved December 2017), Section 2 states the expectation of compliance for the institutional mission.

The institution has a clearly defined, comprehensive, and published mission
specific to the institution and appropriate for higher education. The mission
addresses teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service.

Contextually, the mission guides the public’s perception of the institution, conveying a sense of the university’s uniqueness and identifying the qualities and values as it defines its role and distinctiveness in the higher education community.

1.2 The purpose of this regulation is to provide the basis for the periodic review of the institution’s mission statement in order to ensure it remains both current and reflective of its unique stature.

2.  Scope

This regulation applies to North Carolina Central University.

3.  Regulation

3.1 North Carolina Central University shall review its “Mission Statement” no less than every three years to ensure that it is both current and comprehensive. This review will be conducted by a committee convened by the Chancellor; the committee will make a recommendation to the Chancellor that the mission statement shall remain the same or warrants further review by the designees of the Chancellor. If further review is recommended, the committee will make a recommendation on the change that is needed and provide supporting documentation for the recommendation.

3.2 A review of the mission statement can also result from a directive of the Office of the President of the University of North Carolina System.

4.  Required Approval

Any recommended change to the university’s mission statement requires the approval of the NCCU Board of Trustees (BOT) and approval of the UNC Board of Governors before the change becomes effective.
