Frequently Asked Questions
What is Shibboleth?

The Shibboleth System is a standards based, open source software package for web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner. (Reference: http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/)

North Carolina Central University is part of the UNC Identity Federation, established by UNC General Administration. The goal of the Federation is to facilitate the optimization of service delivery and minimize the duplication of resources across the campuses by providing the trust fabric and technical architecture required to exchange authentication credentials and identity attributes in a secure manner. (Reference: http://federation.northcarolina.edu/)

The following web services are available with Shibboleth.

Web services that use Shibboleth for authentication will have both single sign-on and automatic sign-in (for campus AD Windows workstations).

For a list of available attributes, see FAQ "What attributes are available to Shibboleth-enabled Service Providers?".
