Jobs/Responsibilities

The Director of Development for BRITE is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. The Director of Development reports directly to the BRITE Director.

Biography

William G. Smith is a resident of Durham North Carolina. Smith is a 1977 graduate of NCCU where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration. Smith served as Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement for Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) from 2009-2014 where he was responsible for raising $7.7MM during his tenure at ECSU. Previously he served as President/CEO for Mutual Community Savings Bank, Inc. SSB (MCSB) from 2001 to 2008. He led the successful merger of MCSB with Mechanics and Farmers Bancorp, Inc. in March 2008.Before joining MCSB, Smith, was a 24 year First Union National Bank/Wachovia executive serving as a Senior Vice President and Sales Leader for Community Development in the bank's six state mid-Atlantic Region. He was named Senior Vice President in 1990, serving as regional consumer bank executive for a 17 county eastern North Carolina area. In 1992 he was named Market/Area President for First Union/Wachovia's Durham/Chapel Hill markets where he led a successful companywide pilot to redesign the retail bank. Smith has been active in the community for many years and has served in leadership roles on various boards and committees. He served on the NCCU Board of Trustees, the NCCU Foundation Board and the UNC Board of Governors. Currently he serves as treasurer for Global Scholars Academy Charter School of Durham. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the Sigma Pi Fraternity (the Boule') which are service organizations.
He is married to the former Norma Denise Petway. He has two adult sons Antoine Andre Smith, and Byron Eugene Smith (Wife Aria).
