Welcome to the NCCU Student Disability Services Office online! This site is intended to provide students, faculty and staff in the NCCU campus community an overview of the services and collaborative resources that our office can provide to students with documented disabilities.

NCCU’s Commitment to Students with Disabilities

Consistent with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA) it is the policy of North Carolina Central University that no qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. SDS works diligently to ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided equal access at North Carolina Central University.

The Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) assists eligible students with documented disabilities by determining and coordinating reasonable academic accommodations. Under Section 504, the ADA and ADAAA, reasonable accommodations are determined individually and are intended to minimize the effects of the impact of specific limitations caused by a disability in order for a qualified individual to have equal access to programs, services and activities.

Eligible students include all students enrolled at NCCU, Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School, distance education programs, graduate, and professional programs.  

Mission

The mission of the Office of Student Disability Services is to ensure equal access for students with disabilities to all curricular and co-curricular opportunities offered by North Carolina Central University. Student Disability Services will provide students with disabilities equal access to the academic and practical components of the university experience. We are committed to:

  • provide students with documented disabilities equal accessibility by facilitating reasonable accommodations
  • positively support and encourage students with documented disabilities as independent and successful members of the campus community and beyond
  • to inform and educate the campus community about issues surrounding accessibility

What qualifies as a disability?

A disability is described as a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Examples of impairments that can have a substantial impact on a major life function are:

  • visual impairments and blindness
  • hearing impairment and deafness
  • mobility impairment
  • learning disabilities
  • systemic medical conditions

Major life activities include such things as:

  • caring for oneself
  • performing manual tasks
  • walking
  • seeing
  • hearing
  • speaking
  • breathing
  • thinking
  • concentrating
  • learning
  • working

NOTE: The University will make the final decisions concerning the appropriateness of accommodations.
