In August 2009, the UNC Board of Governors approved the implementation of a hard waiver student health insurance plan on all 16 four-year campuses starting this fall. The term hard waiver means any student enrolled in a degree-seeking program and registered for six or more credit hours must either enroll in the system-wide plan or show evidence of an existing creditable coverage health insurance policy. Read UNC System President Tom Ross’ letter to the UNC Board of Governors here.
The system-wide plan provides a common set of base benefits with several options for campus selected plan enhancements. The UNC system-wide plan has a robust set of benefits at an affordable premium. The plan’s coverage can be expanded by a student to include a spouse/domestic partner and/or children. The coverage is from Aug. 1 to July 31 and is billed by semesters (defined as Aug. 1 – Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 – July 31).
To waive the student insurance for fall 2014 - spring 2015 visit www.bcbsnc.com/student to process an online insurance waiver. The portal will open April 14, 2014 and the last date to submit a waiver request is September 10, 2014. Once the waiver is approved the charge will be removed from your bill.
BCBSNC offers a mobile application that students can use to access the waiver, enrollment and My Member Services for Student Blue accounts.
Students may shop the open market to find creditable health coverage with the benefits and price desired instead of the UNC Student Health Insurance. Additionally, the Student Health Insurance cost is built into the Tuition & Fees at NCCU and is considered in the need analysis used by the Office of Scholarships & Aid.
