Program Requirements: 39 Hours

Gateway 1: Admission to the Program (15 hours)

Requirements: Permanent initial licensure in education or undergraduate degree, 2.7 of above GPA, Praxis I, GRE, interview, essay, and completion of prerequisite courses.

Prerequisite courses:

  • EDGR 5125 - Psychological Foundations of Education (3)
  • EDEC 5634 - Legal and Cultural Foundations in Special Education (3)
  • EDIT 5855 - Advanced Technology for Education or
    EDEC 5679 - Adaptive Technologies for Special Populations or
    EDU 4300 - Computer Utilization
  • EDCI 5221 - Instructional Programs in Mathematics (3)
  • EDEC 5620 - Introduction to Exceptional Children (3)

Gateway 2: General Curriculum Competencies (Initial Licensure Requirements 18 hours)

Prerequisite for all classes EDEC 5620

  • EDEC 5621 - Classroom Management (3)
  • EDEC 5671 - Assessment in Special Education (3)
  • EDEC 5622 - Teaching Students with Special Needs in Elementary School (3)
  • EDEC 5623 - Teaching Adolescents with Special Needs (3)
  • EDEC 5630 - Collaborative Planning for Individualized Student Programs (3)
  • EDEC 5628 - Instructional Reading Strategies for Exceptional Children (3)
    All students requesting initial licensure at this point in their program must complete EDEC 5690, Initial Practicum in Special Education (3)

Gateway 3: Advanced Curriculum Competencies (12 hours)

  • EDGR 5915 - Statistics Applied to Educational Measurement or EDGR 5910 (3)
  • EDGR 5925 - Applied Research Techniques or EDGR 5920 (3)
  • EDEC 5635 - Current Research and Leadership Issues in Special Education (3)
  • EDEC 5695 - Professional Practicum (3) Permission of advisor required
    Prerequisite is two years of successful teaching in special education or EDEC 5690

Specialty Areas Mild Disabilities (9 hours)

  • EDEC 5672 - Characteristics of Students with Learning Disabilities (3)
  • EDEC 5681 - Methods for Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities (3)
    Prerequisite EDEC 5672
  • EDEC 5685 - Advanced Seminar in Learning Disabilities (3)
    Prerequisite: EDEC 5681

Graduation Requirements

  • Comprehensive Exam
  • Portfolio Review
