Program Requirements: 39 Hours

Gateway I: Prerequisites (15 - 18)

  • EDEC 5810 - Variations in Development, Birth to Age Eight (3)
  • EDSH 5700 - Speech and Language Development (3)
  • EDEC 5628 - Reading Strategies (3)
  • EDCI 5221 - Instructional Programs in Mathematics (3)
  • EDEC 5620 - Introduction to Exceptional Children (3)
    Evidence of technology competencies required by NCDPI or EDIT 5855

Gateway 2: Foundations (18)

  • EDEC 5626 - Seminar in Cultural Diversity (1)
  • EDEC 5820 - Affecting the Behavior of Young Children (3)
  • EDEC 5870 - Assessment in Early Childhood (3)
  • EDSH 5745 - Early Intervention: Teaching and Assessing Infants and Toddlers (3)
  • EDEC 5840 - Advanced Curriculum and Methods for Inclusive Early Education (3)
  • EDEC 5624 - Collaborative IEP Planning (2)
  • EDEC 5690 - Initial Practicum (May be satisfied if candidate has 2 consecutive years of TPAI ratings of "Standard" or higher with BK populations. Faculty observation is required to validate areas of BK competence and courses needed. Initial practicum includes 5 weeks in infant-toddler setting, 5 weeks preschool, 5 weeks kindergarten (all inclusive settings) (3)

All students requesting initial licensure at this point in the program must complete EDEC 5690 as described above.

Gateway 3: Advanced Competencies for Research and Leadership (12)

  • EDGR 5925 - Applied Research or EDGR 5920 (3)
  • EDEC 5635 - Current Research, Leadership, Collaboration (3)
  • EDEC 5919 - Statistics Applied to Ed. Measurement, or EDGR 5910 (3)
    Prerequisite: Completion of Gateway 2
  • EDEC 5695 - Professional Practicum Prerequisite is two years successful teaching in the specialty area or EDEC 5694 Initial Practicum (3)
    Prerequisite: two years of successful teaching in specialty area or EDEC 5690

Specialty Area: Diversity in Language Development and Early Literacy (9)

  • EDSH 5780 - Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition (3)
  • FCSG 5500 - Diversity and Transition in Family Structures (3)
  • EDCI 5235 - Emergent Literacy in Young Children, B -K (3)
